  • [01] PAPHOS AIRPORT - COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER

Paphos new airport, on the western coast, is expected to begin operating in late 2008, Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou has said.

Speaking after a visit to the site, he said construction work began in June last year and is expected to be completed around the end of next year, when the airport is set to begin operating, noting that construction work is on course as far as timetables are concerned.

The new passenger terminal will cover 1888 square metres and will be a modern building of high specifications, providing 760 parking places for private cars, 36 places for buses and 84 places for taxis.

[02] CYPRUS HOUSE - INTRODUCTION OF EURO

The Cyprus House of Representatives has approved amendments to existing legislation governing the introduction of the euro, as of January 1st 2008, to ensure smoother enforcement of the law.

The amendment was passed unanimously and provides for the participation of ten members in the Euro-observatory instead of the existing seven. The three extra members will come from the ranks of the three main trade unions (PEO, SEK and DEOK), who will appoint one representative each to the Euro-observatory.

Another provision stipulates that cheques issued in Cyprus pounds after December 31st 2007 will not be valid.
