  • [01] JULY AGREEMENT - MEETINGS

No date has been set for a meeting between representatives of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, in the context of a UN-brokered agreement in July last year, Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas has said.

Palmas said there is no scheduled meeting either between the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President of Cyprus Tasos Tzionis and the aide of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rasit Pertev or between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

Palmas was responding to comments by Talats spokesman Hasan Ercakica that a meeting between Papadopoulos and Talat could take place if the Greek Cypriot side wants it.

Palmas recalled that Papadopoulos hand sent two letters to Talat, one calling for a meeting between them at the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons to which Talat did not respond and for a meeting with the President, with a view to pursue the implementation of the July 2006 agreement.

President Papadopoulos visited Monday the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons in the UN controlled area at the now defunct Nicosia airport, where he was briefed about the work carried out by forensic experts.

Papadopoulos and Talat agreed on 8 July 2006 to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    [02] CY PILOTS - STRIKE

Cyprus Airways pilots have announced they will go on a five-hour work stoppage on Saturday (July 21), which will affect about 1200 passengers on four flights to and from Paris, London, Manchester and Athens. Cyprus Airways has condemned the strike, called to protest ``the violation of the terms of the collective agreement``, according to the pilots trade union PASIPI. CY has assured passengers that it would do all it can to make alternative arrangements for the passengers concern to avoid any hassle.

PASIPI President Andreas Georgiou maintains that for the past two years Cyprus Airways ``has been violating unilaterally the collective agreement``, which he said must be respected. He told CNA that CY has been duly notified about Saturdays strike, recalling that the decision to take measures against the violation of the agreement was taken unanimously at the trade unions AGM four months ago. Over the past four months, we have given the new chairman of the Board of Directors of CY a grace period to try and solve this problem, but we cannot wait any longer, Georgiou added.

A press release, issued by the airline, expresses surprise and condemns strongly the unexpected strike, noting that this takes place during the summer peak tourist period. Such moves achieve nothing but causing a lot of hassle to passengers and affect adversely the prestige of the airline, resulting in additional financial crisis``, the press release adds. The airline also points out that the companys financial situation is such that it cannot at this stage give its staff any new benefits, and this, it says, has been explained repeatedly to PASIPI.

[03] GREEK EDUCATION MINISTER - VISIT

Marietta Yiannakou, Greek Minister of National Education and Religion, arrives in Cyprus on Thursday on a five-day official visit, to represent the Greek government in commemorative events to mark 33 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The visit takes place at the invitation of her Cypriot counterpart Akis Kleanthous, who will have talks with Yiannakou on matters of mutual interest on two consecutive days.

The Greek Minister will be received by President Tassos Papadopoulos and attend a dinner, hosted by Kleanthous. On Friday, the anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, she will lay a wreath at a memorial of Greek soldiers, killed during the summer of 74 and will also attend a church service in memory of all those killed during the invasion.

She will then move on to Pafos to attend on Sunday a memorial service for those killed during the invasion. Yiannakou leaves on Monday.

[04] CB GOVERNOR - ECB BOARD

The Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Athanasios Orphanides will participate July 19 in a meeting of the European Central Bank Board of Directors for the first time since the decision of ECOFIN to allow Cyprus accession to the eurozone.

Orphanides departed Wednesday for Frankfurt where the meeting will take place.

After the ECOFIN Council has endorsed the reports by the European Commission and the European Central Bank for the entry of Cyprus and Malta into the eurozone and the adoption of the euro on 1 January 2008, the CB Governor is entitled to participate in the ECB meetings as an observer. Cyprus Central Bank will become full member after the adoption of euro. The ECB Board of Directors is the most important decision making body of the European Central Bank. One of its main duties is to determine the monetary policy within the euroarea.
