[01] EAC - HEAT - ELECTRICITYDemand in electricity stood at 995 Megawatts on Tuesday morning, with the total available production being 1,006 Megawatts, as Cyprus is still sweltering in a heat wave and occasional blackouts have been recorded across the island.By midday the availability of electricity is expected to be on the borderline, according to the authorities, which warned that in case there is a larger demand, measures will have to be taken to balance production and demand. Although temperatures have dropped since Monday, humidity still remains high and so does demand in electricity. The authorities have said that all production units are in operation with significant drops in availability due to high temperatures, while a gas turbine of a 35 Megawatt capacity is out of order since Monday and will probably not be repaired and fully operational on Tuesday. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) said that electricity failures in various areas were not related to the high demand and EAC`s production capacity, and supply has been restored. Temperatures in Cyprus have reached 43 degrees Centigrade over the past few days. The weather forecast for Tuesday predicted temperatures of 40 degrees Centigrade. [02] UNFICYP - DE-MININGThe UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) welcomes Monday`s announcement by the European Commission concerning the signing of a 4 million Euro contract with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), in order to complete the remaining mine clearance activity inside the UN-patrolled buffer zone in Cyprus.UNFICYP remains committed to providing its full support in efforts to complete the work in the buffer zone. According to an UNFICYP press release, the de-mining project implemented by UNDP and Partnership for the Future, Mine Action Centre (PFF MAC), has so far released over 2,200,000 square metres of land and removed 2,810 mines from Cyprus. [03] MARKOULLI - PRIORITIESMinister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoulli assures in a written statement that her main priority was always to serve the best interests of Cyprus and that her appointment to the post of Minister appears to have troubled certain persons.Markoulli, the first woman appointed to the post, points out that it was disheartening that those annoyed by her appointment had resorted to conveying rumours which were far from the truth. Regarding the Annan plan, Markoulli notes that what was important was its rejection by the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriot community and for this reason she contributed with all her might and diplomatic experience to the overall effort to block the aims of Turkey and other international circles to harm the Greek Cypriot side after it voted against the Annan plan. [04] FAMAGUSTA - EVENTThe Municipality of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta will be holding an anti-occupation event on August 4, dedicated to the youth of Famagusta.Famagusta Vice-Mayor Andreas Shopahas said the youth has rightly gained this dedication, since it showed ``a great interest during the campaign to gather signatures aiming at the return to the occupied town of Famagusta.`` He added that the event would be attended by members of Parliament, mayors from Greece and MPs from the United Kingdom.
