  • [01] MISSING - IDENTIFICATIONS

There will be more identifications of remains of missing persons, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, as forensic experts from both communities continue exhumations on both sides of the divided island, according to officials.

The third member of the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) Christophe Girod has told CNA that the families of those exhumed and identified in the most recent spade of exhumations have all been notified about the fate of their loved ones, who were listed as missing.

He also said that the return of all remains is expected to be completed within the next few days.

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot scientists continue their work at the Anthropological Laboratory and the Institute of Neurology and Genetics and new identifications of remains are expected in October, he said.

The chairman of the Committee of Relatives of Missing Persons and Undeclared Prisoners of War Nikos Theodosiou told CNA that the number of Greek Cypriot missing persons today stands at 1,534.

So far, 85 Greek Cypriots, who were listed as missing in the catalogue of 1,619 persons, have been identified; 47 of them have been identified when the government of Cyprus unilaterally carried out exhumations and identifications of remains in two cemeteries in the southern government controlled part of the island and 38 remains have been identified through the work of the CMP, when exhumations took place in the occupied areas of Kyrenia and Yialousa, he explained.

Theodosiou said he expects that more identifications of Greek Cypriots missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion will be announced soon.

Apart from the 38 Greek Cypriots, the remains of 19 Turkish Cypriots have been exhumed and identified, 13 of them have been missing since intercommunal strife in the early 60s.

[02] CYPRUS - WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

Cyprus participated on Wednesday for the first time in the worldwide synchronised breastfeeding campaign. A total of 54 mothers began simultaneous breastfeeding their babies at 10:00 local time (0700 GMT), when the synchronised breastfeeding campaign began all over the world.

Participating mothers in the campaign sent the message that breastfeeding is a gift of life for infants and babies.

The event took place in Nicosia and began with a speech by Minister of Health Costas Kadis, who said that the event points out the importance of breastfeeding. The state, he added, should give special attention to the increase of the level of awareness of different social groups about the advantages of breastfeeding.

    [03] BAGHDATIS - ROGERS CUP

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis, number 19 in the world ranking, beat on Tuesday Spanish Carlos Moya, 18th seeded, in the first round of the ATP Masters Series Canada, known as Rogers Cup, that takes place in Montreal, Canada. Baghdatis faces on Wednesday Dutch Robin Haase (103rd seeded), who beat Czech Tomas Berdych, 10th seeded, with 2 0 (6-4, 7-5).

In his first match on Tuesday, the popular Cypriot player beat Moya with 2-0 (7-6(7), 6-1) in a game that lasted one hour and 25 minutes. It was the third meeting between the two players this year. Moya came out on top on hard court in Sydney while Baghdatis took his revenge on clay at the Tennis Masters Series Rome.
