  • [01] CYPRIOT FM PAPADOPOULOS TALAT MEETING

Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis hopes that the Turkish Cypriot side will prove to be true to its words with regard to next months meeting between the President and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of a meeting of overseas Cypriots, Marcoullis expressed hope that statements by the Turkish Cypriot side will be implemented, so that the September 5th meeting between President Tassos Papadopoulos and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will have substance and be effective.

Answering questions on the issue, the Foreign Minister called for caution until the outcome of the Papadopoulos-Talat meeting is known.

We are monitoring the statements by the Turkish Cypriot side and truly hope that these will be implemented so that the 5th September meeting will have substance and be effective, she added.

We want to see the working groups and the technical committees, as provided by the July 8 agreement and the Gambari procedure, begin operating, the Minister said, referring to a UN-brokered agreement in July last year to help resume substantive negotiations towards a settlement.

The UN announced on Tuesday that President Papadopoulos and Talat will meet on September 5. The meeting will be the first encounter between Papadopoulos and Talat since they met on 8 July 2006 when a UN-brokered agreement was reached between the two leaders.

The July agreement provides for periodical meetings between the leaders of the two communities to help make headway towards the implementation of what was agreed. Since July last year, Papadopoulos` and Talat`s senior aides have been meeting to discuss the modalities of the agreement but without any concrete results so far.

In other statements, Marcoullis said she is expecting the results of demarches by the Cyprus Permanent Representation in New York to the UN over Turkish moves in the village of Pyla, bordering the northern Turkish occupied part of the Republic, with regard to the supply of electricity in the area.

She repeated that the issue is very serious, adding that all demarches were made to the highest possible level both here in Nicosia and in New York.

A press report by Greek-Cypriot daily Phileleftheros said on Tuesday that the Turkish Cypriot illegal regime in the occupied areas is trying to create a new status quo in Pyla by intercepting electricity by the Cyprus Electricity Authority and by threatening Greek Cypriots who live in the community.

    [02] ABRAMOVICH - OCCUPIED AREAS - STATEMENT

Head of Millhouse Public Relations John Mann has dismissed as ``entirely false`` reports in Turkish media that Roman Abramovich has invested in real estate project ``Chelsey Village`` in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

``On August 21, 2007, Turkish media reported that Mr. Roman Abramovich had invested in a real estate project entitled `Chelsey Village` in northern Cyprus, as well as in the construction or acquisition of several tourist and residential properties in Turkey. These reports are entirely false,`` he says in a press release.

Mann adds that ``neither Mr. Abramovich, Chelsea Football Club, nor any other affiliated company is in any way associated with Chelsey Village`` and that ``they are also not involved in any of the other projects named in these media reports, nor in any other properties in northern Cyprus or Turkey.``

    [03] PORTUGUESE FM VISIT

Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Marques Amado arrives in Cyprus on Thursday, on a two-day official visit.

After his arrival, Amado, whose country holds the six-monthly rotating EU presidency, will attend a private dinner hosted in his honour by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

On Friday, he will have a meeting with House President Demetris Christofias and later on see Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis. Talks will follow between delegations from both ministries.

[04] ISSF WORLD SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS CYPRUS

Cyprus will play host to the ISSF World Shooting Championships between 1-10 September 2007, at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Nicosia.

The World Shooting Championships is the biggest annual event organised by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) and this is the third time in 12 years that the Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation is hosting this event.

More than 670 athletes from 81 countries will participate in the World Shooting Championships, the last games at this level before next year`s Olympic Games in China. Some 200 trainers and technicians will accompany the athletes to Cyprus.
