[01] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - CYPRUS INITIATIVEAny new United Nations initiative on the Cyprus problem should be adequately prepared to ensure the best possible prospects for a successful and lasting outcome, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said here on Tuesday, receiving the credentials of the first Ambassador of Honduras to the Cyprus, based in Italy, Roberto Ochoa Madrid.President Papadopoulos said the 8 July 2006 Agreement, reached between him and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which has the full support of the United Nations Security Council, can create the conditions necessary for the commencement of substantive negotiations under the auspices of the UN Secretary General for a solution of the Cyprus problem. He noted that ``mindful of this and in response to the recent call of the Security Council, I proposed a meeting between myself and Mr. Talat in order to initiate the implementation of the Agreement, as we have witnessed a long delay in the realisation of the 8 July process`` and noted that he looked forward to meeting Talat on 5 September. ``Our purpose is to break through the deadlock and expeditiously move forward with the implementation of the 8 July process,`` he stressed. The Agreement provides for the establishment of working groups to address substantive issues of the Cyprus problem, and technical committees for the day-to-day problems that affect the people, as well as confidence building measures. The new Ambassador of Honduras said his country has been present in all the UN resolutions for keeping the peace in Cyprus. ``During our participation in the Security Council, we supported all those resolutions in favour of its freedom, sovereignty, and integrity, as well as all those peace keeping measures and especially supporting any humanitarian work in the area,`` he noted. Furthermore he noted that Honduras saw with great respect and admiration the good will action of the Cypriot government when on 8 March 2007 the wall dividing the country and its capital, Nicosia, was demolished. [02] BRITAIN - PAPADOPOULOS - TALAT MEETINGBritish High Commissioner in Nicosia Peter Millet has said that Britain is expecting the right results from Wednesday`s meeting between President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.Speaking after a meeting with Minister of the Interior Christos Patsalides, Millet said ``Britain and the permanent members of the Security Council support the July 8 procedure and we want this process to begin and we expect the right results from this meeting.`` Asked if further meetings should take place between the leaders of the two communities, Millet said that depended on their political will. In July last year Papadopoulos and Talat agreed on a procedure to make headway towards substantive negotiations, through discussions at working groups and technical committee of daily concerns as well as issues of substance. Tomorrow`s meeting is set to press on with the implementation of what was agreed, under UN auspices, on 8th July, 2006. Both Patsalides and Millet said they reaffirmed the excellent relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom and expressed their intention to further strengthen their ties in various sectors falling within the interests of the Ministry of the Interior. [03] MILITARY POLICE OFFICERS - BACK FROM GREECEThirty two military police officers have returned to Cyprus from Greece, aboard two Greek Air Force C130 planes, having assisted in efforts to combat devastating fires that swept over Greece. The officers were welcomed at Larnaca Airport by Minister of Defence Christodoulos Pashiardis and National Guard Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas.Pashiardis said the members of the military police ``had voluntarily and spontaneously gone to Greece to contribute in their own way and with their own means in tackling the tragic consequences of the fires that hit Greece.`` He added that the National Guard was present in the struggle to put out the fires that reduced whole villages and vast expanses of forest to ashes. Cyprus has sent to Greece the most numerous team of firefighters and other personnel to help fight the raging fires. On the island, there was an overwhelming response to appeals for humanitarian and other assistance for Greece. [04] UN ENVOY ON PAPADOPOULOS-TALAT MEETINGMichael Moller, UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus, has said he is always optimistic in the execution of his duties. The top UN envoy in Cyprus was speaking only 24 hours before a meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Community Mehmet Ali Talat. Moller had an hour long working meeting today with Papadopoulos, ahead of Wednesdays meeting at 1600 local time (1300 GMT), at Mollers official residence in the UN protected area, in the vicinity of the now defunct Nicosia airport.Speaking after seeing Papadopoulos, at the Presidential Palace, Moller said he had a working meeting with the President. Moller refrained from any further comment but when asked if he was optimistic about tomorrows meeting, he replied: I am always optimistic. Papadopoulos and Talat will meet on Wednesday for the first time since July last year when, under UN auspices, they came to an agreement in an effort to resume negotiations leading to a solution that would reunite the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The July 2006 agreement provides for discussions at technical committees and working groups to deal with day to day issues as well as substantive matters. So far, no such discussions have taken place, in spite of numerous meetings between the top aides of the leaders of the two communities.
