[01] REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS - MILITARY PARADE
The Republics armed forces, the National Guard, which acts as a
deterrent, consolidates the feeling of security among the people and
provides the country with the ability to continue efforts, through
peaceful means, to solve the Cyprus issue, President of the Republic
Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed, after the military parade to mark 47
years of independence.
In his statement, Papadopoulos congratulated the National Guard
leadership and officials on the excellent appearance during the parade,
noting that the the deterrent, which the National Guard offers,
strengthens the feeling of security among the people and gives us the
ability to continue our efforts through political negotiations to solve
the Cyprus issue. Today, he added, we celebrate the 47th anniversary of
our independence, adding I repeat once again, we are entitled to and
are proud of everything which we have achieved so far, in common and
collectively, through hard work. The President expressed reserved
optimism for tomorrow and appreciation for yesterday and today.
In his statement, Greek Defence Minister Meimarakis pointed out that
cooperation between Greece and Cyprus is excellent, frank, substantive
and on many levels and reiterated Greeces support. Meimarakis said it
was an honour for him to represent the government of Greece at todays
celebrations to mark the islands independence anniversary and thanked
the government and the people of Cyprus for their support in handling
the devastating fires that raged in Greece this summer. This is proof
of our strong, brotherly bonds which unite our people, the Greeek
Minister said, adding that todays parade also confirmed these bonds.
The excellent formation, the high morale of all those who participated
proved that the Republic of Cyprus defences and security are in very
good hands.
Participating in today`s parade were infantry, artillery and naval
forces and members of the Greek military contingent stationed in Cyprus
in accordance with the 1960 Treaty of Establishment of the Republic,
the police, the fire brigade, the forestry and the civil defence
services. Present were also a military police unit, comprising mainly
reservists, and a special unit of commandos, set up 1996, of well
trained regular members of the armed forces. Commando units, naval
forces and various branches of the Republic`s armed forces also
paraded.
[02] CMP - EURO MP - MISSING PERSONS
Member of the European Parliament Ewa Klamt is visiting Cyprus from the
1st to the 4th of October 2007, following her appointment by the
European Parliaments Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home
Affairs (LIBE) as Member responsible for following the development on
the ``Missing Persons in Cyprus``. Her appointment follows the adoption
of a resolution on the issue of the missing persons in Cyprus by the
European Parliament last March.
In her capacity as rapporteur of the LIBE Committee, she is entrusted
with following all issues related to the problems of missing persons in
Cyprus, from a humanitarian perspective. According to the resolution of
the European Parliament, her work should be undertaken in close
cooperation with the Commission.
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) welcomes MEP Ewa
Klamts appointment and will do its utmost to facilitate her mission in
Cyprus. She will meet with people from both communities concerned with
the issue of the persons unaccounted for, including relatives of
missing persons and representatives of family associations, as well as
officials of the CMP. She will also tour the CMP anthropological
laboratory in the United Nations Protected Area and visit exhumation
sites on each sides of the cease-fire line.
