The European Parliament Contact Group for Relations with the Turkish Cypriots has expressed concern over Ankaras stance on the Cyprus problem, especially after remarks by Turkeys President on two separate states in Cyprus and the absence of any reference by him to a bizonal bicommunal federal solution.

Speaking at a press conference in Nicosia, MEPs Francoise Grossetete, Mechtild Rothe, Karin Resetarits, Francis Wurtz and Georgios Georgiou referred to the meetings they had over the past couple of days in Cyprus and assured that their aim was reconciliation, a comprehensive settlement and the reunification of the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Grossetete said the meetings of the Group in Cyprus were very interesting and left the members of the Group with mixed feelings.

She explained that there was deep concern regarding the reunification process, especially after the statements Abdullah Gul has made. She added that the aim of the mission continues to be the reunification of the island, noting that there is hope for a solution and reunification.

    [02] CYPRUS REMEMBRANCE DAY

Cyprus commemorated Friday those killed during the two World Wars, in a ceremony held at the War Memorial in Nicosia, to mark November 11, which is Remembrance Day.

In his address at the ceremony, President Papadopoulos said that our small country Cyprus has made its own contribution to this global mobilisation to protect freedom and democracy, which is disproportionate to its size as thousands of Cypriots voluntarily joined the Allied forces and many of them sacrificed their life.

During World War II, 30.000 Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots served with devotion, zeal and self-denial the ideals of democracy and freedom for all peoples, he recalled.

They fought far away from home, on many fronts, defending freedom, universal justice and world peace. Countries where Cypriots fought won their freedom and enjoy the fruits of peace, while our island remained under foreign occupation, under British colonial rule, Papadopoulos added.
