[01] ECHR - PROPERTY CASEThe government will amend existing legislation, if need be, President Tassos Papadopoulos has said, adding that the government always acts in line with advice from the Law Office of the Republic.His comments came in the wake of a decision by the European Court of Human Rights to reject a government request to intervene in a case relating to the property of Greek Cypriot Michael Tymvios in Turkish occupied Cyprus, still pending before the Court. Tymvios is said to be negotiating a deal with a self-styled compensation commission, set up by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, in a bid to come to an out of court settlement through an exchange of property. Papadopoulos pointed out that Tymvios case is specific and said that this does not mean that existing legislation on human rights is now being questioned. The Court has said that the dispute is between Tymvios and Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus is not involved. Every court has competencies, the parties involved in a case have the right to intervene and in extraordinary cases, if the Court deems that a more general issue is at stake, it may accept interventions by governments, which are not involved in a case, Papadopoulos explained. Referring to a decision by the ECHR to hear the cases of 36 Greek Cypriots against Turkey, President Papadopoulos said this was a very positive development since the Court had not accepted the so-called compensation commission. Tymvios had submitted an application against Turkey before the ECHR for loss of use of his property in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since the invasion of 1974. Later on he applied to the "compensation commission" and withdrew his application. The Court is now expected to proceed with a friendly settlement between the two parties to the case. [02] BUSH - GUL - CYPRUS QUESTIONUS President George Bush and Turkish President Abdullah Gul have discussed the need to reach a solution to the longstanding issue of Cyprus and expressed the desire to get the UN process moving again, a US Senior Administration official has said, commenting on Monday`s Bush Gul meeting in Washington. «Bush and Gul discussed the need to find a solution to the longstanding issue of Cyprus and the President again talked about his support of the UN process and hopes that there might be a way to move this process forward, the official said.They discussed the fact that it has been a stalemate since the referendum of 2004 and the desire of both to get the UN process moving again, he said, in response to questions. The US official clarified that the two Presidents didnt discuss any specifics on how to get that moving. I know that President Gul is going up to New York and he will be talking to UN Secretary General to discuss this issue as well and he mentioned that to the President. He added that Gul expressed his wish for a Cyprus solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation and asked the US for their contribution in lifting the so called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. [03] CYPRIOT - PALESTINIAN FMsCypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis has reaffirmed Cyprus` support to the creation of Palestinian state that would exist side by side with the state of Israel in conditions of peace and security. Marcoullis, who paid a two-day working visit to Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, has met in Amman the Authority`s Foreign Minister Riad Al Malki, who briefed her on the situation in the Palestinian territories.He expressed the Palestinian Authority`s concern on the possible repercussions to the efforts to create the right climate in the negotiations for the settlement of the Palestinian problem, created by the expansion of the Israeli settlements and the issue of Security in the West Bank. AlMalki also reaffirmed the excellent level of the relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Palestinian people, which is founded on the historical ties of friendship and solidarity between the two peoples. He also expressed the Authority`s gratitude for the financial assistance totaling two million dollars pledged by Cyprus during the donors Conference in Paris last December. Marcoullis assured her interllocutor of Cyprus` firm support towards the Palestinians in their struggle to establish a Palestinian state, living side by side with the state of Israel in conditions of peace and security. She briefed Al-Malki on the current situation in Cyprus, making special reference to aspects of the Cyprus problem, which resemble with those of the Palestinian question. [04] CYPRUS - JORDANCypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis has discussed with her counterpart from Jordan Salahedin Al-Bashir and the Jordan Prime Minister Nader Dahabi the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue as well as other issues of mutual concern.Marcoullis briefed the Jordan officials on Turkeys stance which clearly promotes the idea of a Cyprus solution based on two states in Cyprus, in defiance of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in contrast with the obligations undertaken by Turkey regarding the July 8th Agreement. She also referred to the Turkish actions in the framework of the Organization of Islamic Conference which aim at promoting secessionist goals despite UN resolutions 550 and 541 of 1984 which call on all states not to recognize or facilitate the pseudostate in Turkish occupied Cyprus. The Prime Minister of Jordan said that his country looks forward to cooperating with Cyprus in the field of tourism and renewable energy sources. The two sides agreed to sign an agreement on promoting and protecting investments, as well on avoiding double taxation.
