President Demetris Christofias will have talks in Athens with the Greek government and the political leadership early next week. The President leaves for the Greek capital on Tuesday afternoon, his first trip abroad since taking office last Thursday. President Christofias will meet President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and political party leaders.

Christofias has informed the Council of Ministers that he would be flying to Athens on Tuesday for a working visit that will last until Thursday. The meeting with Greek Premier is scheduled for Wednesday at 12.15. After statements to the press, Karamanlis will host a working lunch for the Cyprus President. The second trip of Cyprus President will be to Brussels where he will attend the European Council between March, 13-14.

Christofias was elected the sixth President of the Republic at Sunday`s elections with 53.36 per cent of the vote, beating his main rival Ioannis Kasoulides, who got 46.64 per cent.

[02] NICOSIA MAYOR - LEDRA STREET

Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou has said that the Municipality is ready to facilitate the opening of a crossing point in Ledra Street, once a political decision has been reached by the leaders of the two communities. The Municipality is ready to open the crossing point within five days, once the political decision has been taken, she said. The opening of the crossing point, at one of the oldest and most commercial streets of the capital, was the topic of discussion at Wednesdays meeting of technical groups from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities.

``At the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their readiness to proceed with the opening of a crossing point,`` to and from the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Mavrou said. The decision, however, is up to the leaders of the two communities, she pointed out. As far as the Municipality is concerned, the Mayor explained, there are no problems, noting that many issues relating to the opening of a crossing point have already been dealt with.

She noted that after the opening of the crossing point in Ledra street restoration work on the nearby buildings will be carried out without affecting the safe passage of pedestrians. This work, she said, will take about three months to be completed.
