    Deputy head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Li Jinjun, said Cyprus independence and territorial integrity must be respected, expressing his countrys support to a peaceful settlement of the islands long standing problem through negotiations.

    Speaking after a meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, Jinjun head of a CPC delegation visiting Cyprus, noted that as a member of the UN Security Council, China, together with the international community makes efforts for a just solution of the Cyprus issue.

    Kyprianou briefed the Chinese delegation on the latest Cyprus developments and noted the friendly bilateral relations which are based on principles and the need to implement international law, especially on issues relating to the territorial integrity of states.

    As regards the Taiwan issue, the Cypriot FM also reiterated Cyprus support on the basic principle in favor of one China.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
