  • [01] US ASSISTANT SECRETARY - CYPRUS QUESTION

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried said the US is going to work with the government of Cyprus and the Turkish side so that progress can be made towards a Cyprus settlement.

In statements to journalists, Fried said there have been some rather encouraging signs recently.

``A new opening seems to be agreed. There is a new spirit of cooperation. We applaud this. We are going to work with the government of Cyprus and our Turkish friends so that progress can be made``, he added.

Referring to UN Undersecretary General Lyn Paskoe`s trip to Cyprus, he said ``the trip left us with a sense there is a real opportunity for progress``.

``We applaud that and I will do what is possible to do. Whether it involves a visit or not it will depend on timing, how much progress it has been made. If this is a moment let us use the moment, lets not let it pass. This is a good time and if we can go ahead let`s by all means do so``, he concluded.

[02] FINANCE MINISTER - CYPRUS TALKS - ECONOMY

Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis has expressed hope that talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will bear fruit and have positive results on the island`s economy.

Speaking during a press conference organized in Athens Monday, Stavrakis said that if Cyprus political problem was solved there would be financial benefits both for Cyprus and for Greece.

Stavrakis who will deliver a speech on Tuesday at the ECONOMIST Conference organised in Athens, also said that the opening of Ledra Street has not solved the Cyprus problem but it was a symbolic movement, which brings the two communities closer to each other.
