[01] BRITAIN - CYPRUS QUESTION
The omens for both sides in Cyprus negotiating in complete seriousness
are very high and Britain will do everything it can, including on the
issue of the British sovereign bases, to provide incentives to make
such negotiations a success, British Minister of State of the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office Lord Malloch-Brown has said.
Brown was replying to a question by former British special
representative on Cyprus Lord David Hannay, who asked the Minister to
confirm the importance in any resumed negotiations of the two Cypriot
parties taking full ownership of the process from the outset up to and
beyond its conclusion and that in the context of an emerging settlement
the British Government will renew the offer made in 2003 to hand over a
substantial part of the sovereign base areas to a reunited Cyprus.
Brown said that ``we now have a new President in Cyprus with a new and
fresh mandate who is committed to negotiations`` adding that Turkish
Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has been committed since he came to
office to finding an agreement. ``The omens for both sides taking
ownership of this and negotiating in complete seriousness are very
high. Of course we will do everything we can-including on the issue of
the sovereign bases-to provide incentives to make such negotiations a
success,`` he noted.
[02] VIETNAM - CYPRUS QUESTION
Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security Council said
his country supports efforts to resolve the Cyprus question.
According to Vietnamese news agency VietnamNet Bridge, Vietnams UN
Security Council Ambassador Bui The Giang told the Council on April 15
that a recent agreement between Greek and Turkish communities on the
island has been encouraging.
We welcome some encouraging progress made at a UN-sponsored meeting on
March 21 between leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot
communities, during which the two sides agreed to start fully-fledged
negotiations within three months to resolve the prolonged dispute on
the island, Ambassador Giang said.
