  • [01] GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE - NAMI REMARKS

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou stressed on Wednesday that the Greek Cypriot side will not discuss the Cyprus problem on the basis of a UN-proposed solution plan, which it rejected in a referendum four years ago.

Commenting on remarks by Ozdil Nami, adviser to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, that negotiations for a solution will be on the basis of the Annan plan, Stephanou said the position of the Greek Cypriot side is well known.

``The position of our side and that of the government is well known. We are not engaging in talks on the basis of the Annan plan. Our side is participating with its own positions in the dialogue which has begun at the working groups and the technical committees,`` he pointed out.

``We are beginning a process. There will be discussions, dialogue. We have said that it is very likely to have problems in this dialogue, given the differences in our positions,`` he said, adding that ``we should be patient, the dialogue will continue.``

Six working groups and seven technical committees, comprising experts from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, are currently engaged in discussions of substantive issues as well as day to day concerns that affect the people. The purpose of the exercise is to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the leaders of the two communities, who have agreed to meet in three months time to review the progress achieved by these preparatory discussions.

In an interview with the daily newspaper ``Phileleftheros``, Nami said the aim of the Turkish Cypriot side was for negotiations to be held on the basis of the Annan plan.

    [02] SPOKESMAN - ECHR - CYPRUS

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Wednesday that the Cyprus problem cannot be solved in the courts but through comprehensive negotiations that will lead to a mutually accepted settlement.

Commenting on decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in two cases concerning Greek Cypriot property in Turkish occupied Cyprus, Stephanou said the government, in cooperation with the Attorney General, will study in depth all the aspects of the judgment in Greek Cypriot Michael Tymvios` case.

Should anything in this judgment clash with our legislation or contradict the interests of the Republic of Cyprus, the government will defend its interests, the Spokesman said.

[03] UNFICYP - GROUPS AND COMMITTEES

The six working groups and the seven technical committees began their work in a very positive mood, UNFICYP Spokesman Jose Diaz has said.

Invited by CNA to comment on the beginning of the work of the technical committees and working groups, Diaz expressed his optimism about the outcome of their discussions.

Yesterday was the beginning of the process and the members of each technical committee and working group discussed and expressed their positions in a very positive mood, he said.

    [04] CYPRUS - DUST

A high concentration of dust in the atmosphere was recorded in Cyprus on Wednesday.

The Cypriot authorities urge the public and especially the vulnerable groups of the population, such as children, patients and the elderly, to avoid open spaces until the phenomenon recedes. Furthermore, workers in open spaces are urged to use the appropriate personal safety measures.

According to official measurements, the dust particle concentration on Wednesday morning was between 109 and 133mg/m3. The limit is 50mg/m3. On Tuesday the average 24-hour reading exceeded the limit and was between 83mg/m3 and 110mg/m3.
