  • [01] BAKOYIANNIS - CYPRUS

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis assured on her arrival to Cyprus that Greece will contribute so that the new effort underway for a Cyprus settlement will be based on strong foundations and that the necessary preparation is made for direct negotiations that will give the best possible prospects and guarantees for success.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, Bakoyiannis said she would have the opportunity to meet with President Demetris Christofias and the political leadership of the island during her stay.

``We are once again at a very decisively significant time in the long struggle for a just, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem. A new, brave and difficult effort has begun,`` Bakoyiannis said, adding that ``much work awaits us all.``

She assured that ``Greece will contribute so that this new effort is based on strong foundations, so that the necessary and proper preparation is made, that will give the best possible prospects and guarantees for success.``

``Success can be nothing less than a final solution, which will end the illegal occupation, will terminate the blatant violation of international law and the results of the invasion and occupation, and will knock down the last wall of Europe,`` she concluded.

    [02] THEATRE - ROOF

Part of the roof of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre collapsed on Wednesday evening for so far unknown reasons.

Both lanes of the road outside the theatre remain closed to traffic and the area is under heavy Police guard, while specialists are expected to examine and record the damage.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that the theatre was closed at the time and there were no people inside. He added that the Police would be carrying out investigations to determine the reasons the roof caved in.

On Thursday morning MPs from all political parties began arriving at the site to view the damage. Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou, as well as members of the Cyprus Theatrical Organisation Board of Directors, are also expected to visit the scene.
