    Cyprus supports the implementation of the UN resolutions as regards the occupation by Israel of Arab lands, the freedom of the Golan Heights and the creation of a Palestinian state. It also supports the recognition of the Israeli state by the Palestinians after the solution of the problem, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said here Sunday after a meeting with Syrian President Bachar Al Assad, which lasted for thirty minutes.

    On his part, President Assad asked about the illegal sea routes conducted between Latakia and the occupied port of Famagusta, said that we discussed this issue with the Cyprus part and the Turkish part frankly and we talked about the relation that has been partly deteriorated between Cyprus and Syria during the last three years. Additionally, President Assad said, That is why I invited the President (Christofias) to come to Syria as soon as possible to discuss this issue and the other issues related to our relation, he added.

    Referring to his meeting with Assad, President Christofias said that between friends there is always understanding and with the President Bachar Al Assad we had a very nice, friendly meeting, as usually the Presidents of my country have with Presidents of the Syrian Republic. Furthermore, Christofias said that they agreed to resolve any possible difficulties existing between the two countries, adding that he will visit officially Syria on the invitation of the Syrian President.
