  • [01] IACOVOU LIMNITIS CROSSING

Cyprus Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou has said there is no particular major obstacle to the opening of Limnitis crossing, and expressed hope that there will be a development on this issue.

The problems faced are technical problems and they will be resolved in the future as they cannot be settled right now, Iacovou said, while responding to a question he said that the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is preparing a military report, which it presents.

He noted that UNFICYP presented its report recently and there is no military impediment as regards the peacekeeping force, he added.

Iacovou noted that he will discuss this issue during the meetings he will have with Turkish Cypriot leaders aide Ozdil Nami, adding that their meeting will continue during August as well, despite the fact that Working Groups and Technical Committees will not meet August 1-21, as this is a vacation period.

Iacovou said however that he could not tell how many meeting he will have with Nami until 3 September when direct talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will begin. He noted that apart from the issue of Limnitis crossing they will have to see the issues of the procedures that will be followed in the future, something which as he said requires the involvement of the two leaders as well.

We will have some ideas and we may look into them together on September 3, he added.

Iacovou briefed today the heads of Cyprus diplomatic missions abroad on the work of the Working Groups and Technical Committees comprising experts from both communities, who have been meeting since and agreement reached between Christofias and Talat in March this year to discuss various aspects of the Cyprus question, including governance, security, economy, health and EU matters, property and territory, with a view to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the two leaders.

On July 25 Christofias and Talat decided to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3, with the aim to reach a ``mutually accepted solution to the Cyprus problem which will safeguard the fundamental and legitimate rights and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots``.

They also instructed their Representatives «to take up the issue of Limnitis/Yesilirmak and other crossings».

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

    [02] MPs CPA CONFERENCE

A delegation from the House of Representatives departs for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday to take part in the 54th Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and associated events (EXCO, Women Parliamentarians Steering Committee, Small Branches Conference and the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table Meeting) which will be held from August 1 to 10.

An official press release said the delegation comprises MPs Aristofanis Georgiou, Eleni Theoharous and Sofoklis Fitis.

Increasing the involvement of parliaments in resolving three of todays most serious global challenges - preventing environmental degradation, promoting sustainable development and reducing threats to security - will be debated by Commonwealth parliamentarians in the meeting. The Cypriot delegation will return home on August 10.

    [03] ACHILLEOS OLYMPIC GAMES

George Achilleos, the Cypriot champion in Shotgun (skeet) and member of the Cyprus Olympic team, has expressed satisfaction about his preparation for the Olympic Games in Beijing and his readiness for a distinction.

Speaking at a press conference, Achilleos said that he has been practicing for the Olympic Games since November 2007. I think we have followed a very good programme. I am in very good condition and I will give my best, using my technique and by remaining as calm as possible, so as to reach my personal record and qualify for the final, he said. If I qualify for the final, everything is possible, he added.

President of the Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation Demetris Lordos said that the Federation is standing beside Achilleos and has faith in his capabilities.

[04] CYPRIOT FOOTBALL CLUBS UEFA DRAW RESULT

Olympiacos FC from Greece will be the opponent of Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta FC, if the Cypriot team qualifies to the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Anorthosis Famagusta FC beat SK Rapid Wien 3-0 for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, in a match held in Larnacas Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium last Wednesday.

The second leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round will be held in Vienna on August 6.

Regarding the UEFA Cup second qualifying round, Cypriot football clubs Omonia and APOEL, both of Nicosia, will face the Greek team AEK Athens FC and the Serbian team FK Crvena Zvezda respectively. This was the result of Friday`s draw, held in Nyon, Switzerland.
