[01] LIMNITIS - NEGOTIATIONSThe opening of a crossing point to and from the northern Turkish occupied areas, at Limnitis, on the north west, is the subject of intense negotiations between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, Acting Government Spokesman and Undersecretary to the President Titos Christofides said here Monday.He made the statement following remarks by Costas Michaelides, community leader of Pyrgos village, near Limnitis, that local residents will prevent Turkish Cypriots from crossing through the area if Greek Cypriots are not allowed to go to the occupied church of Agios Mamas, in Morphou town. Limnitis villagers have been demanding the opening of a crossing point for a long time to facilitate movement to and from the occupied areas. Had the government been passive on the issue, then such mobilisation by the residents of the area would have been justified. However, such actions at this stage are neither wise nor helpful for efforts to open the crossing point, Christofides said. He warned that there is a strong possibility that this kind of mobilisation could lead to longer delays. In a statement, Pyrgos residents said that if they are not allowed to go to Agios Mamas church on August 8 through the same checkpoint which Turkish Cypriots use to cross to the government controlled part of the island, via Kokkina area, then they will not allow Turkish Cypriots to cross either. Kokkina, a coastal village in northeast Cyprus, was the centre of intercommunal clashes in 1964, when Turkish air force planes bombed Greek Cypriot villages in the area. Kokkina is accessible only through the free areas of the Republic or by sea. Turkish Cypriots have been visiting Kokkina by land with the consent of the government of Cyprus. Michaelides said that if Turkish Cypriots do not want problems, then they can cross and we will too. If they do not want us to cross, then they will not cross either. For 45 years now, Greek Cypriot residents in the area of Limnitis have to travel to Paphos, on the western coast, and Limassol, on the south, in order to reach the capital Nicosia. Opening a crossing point at Limnitis would make this journey far shorter. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third. During their meeting on 25 July, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat decided to instruct their Representatives to take up the issue of Limnitis/Yesilirmak and other crossings. [02] CYPRUS TRACK TEAM OLYMPIC GAMESSix athletes will represent Cyprus in the track during the Beijing Olympic Games.The Cypriot Olympic track team comprises Kyriakos Ioannou (high jump), Eleni Artymata (200m.), Tsisiou Alexandra (Javelin), Anna Fitidou (Pole Vault), Alissa Kallinicou (400m.) and Skevi Theodorou (Hammer Throw). Cyprus Amateur Athletic Association (KOEAS) introduced Monday the Cypriot Olympic track team to the Media during a press conference it organised in Nicosia. Speaking during the press conference, Cyprus Amateur Athletic Associations (KOEAS) President Antonios Drakos congratulated the six athletes on their achievement to attain the Olympic ceiling, thus making possible their participation in the Olympic Games. He noted that this team is the stronger ever; expressing hope, the athletes will achieve good results. Speaking to the press, the six athletes expressed optimism and reassured that they will do their best to achieve the individual goals each one has set for the Olympic Games.
