Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou is in touch with the UN with
regard to securing safe passage for Greek Cypriots to a Turkish
occupied church, in Morphou town.
The issue ensued following a request by Kato Pyrgos Community Council,
near Limnitis, on the northwest, to allow people to pray at the church.
Local residents have also warned that they will prevent Turkish
Cypriots from crossing through the area, if Greek Cypriots are not
allowed to go to the occupied church of Agios Mamas to pray.
In statements to CNA, Iacovou said that he would talk to UN Secretary
Generals Special Representative Taye Brook Zerihoun, whom he met on
Monday. Iacovou said he continues his contacts with the UN on the
matter. He was commenting on statements by Kato Pyrgos Community leader
Costas Michaelides who said that if local residents receive written
assurances that they will be able to cross to the occupied church of
Agios Mamas, through Limnitis, to celebrate the saints feast day in
early September, then they will not prevent Turkish Cypriots from going
to Kokkina through the government controlled part of the island, on 8
August.

The government of Cyprus has not asked for Irans mediation towards
Turkey regarding efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus issue, a
Cypriot Foreign Ministrys source has told CNA.
The same source said that during his recent visit to Iran, Cypriot
Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou discussed with his Iranian
counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki Teherans nuclear programme as well as
the Cyprus issue, but underlined that neither Teheran nor Nicosia had
raised the issue of mediation by Iran regarding the Cyprus issue.
The statement came as Nicosias response to a news item published Monday
by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, which said that according to Turkish
diplomatic sources, during his recent visit to Teheran, Turkish Foreign
Minister Ali Babacan was surprised to hear his Iranian counterpart
suggesting that Teheran undertakes a role in the efforts to reach a
Cyprus solution, a proposal rejected by Babacan.
