  • [01] MORPHOY - RESOLUTION

Residents of Turkish occupied Morphou demanded here Wednesday the return of all refugees to their homes, the withdrawal of all Turkish troops from Cyprus occupied northern areas, respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the safeguard of the independence, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Republic Cyprus.

These positions are outlined in a resolution of the Morphou Municipal Council, adopted to mark the 34th anniversary of the occupation of the town of Morphou by Turkish troops. The resolution was handed to the embassies of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, as well as the European Commission`s Representation in Nicosia.

Morphou, along with Famagusta, was seized in 1974 during the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

The resolution notes that the status quo of foreign military occupation and division of an independent, sovereign state, member of the EU and the UN, is totally unacceptable and calls on the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and the EU to join us in our quest for justice and peace for ourselves and future generations.

It says the Turkish military aggression against Cyprus tragically continues unabated for 34 long years with the military occupation, forcible division, violation of human rights, massive colonisation, cultural destruction, property usurpation and ethnic segregation imposed remaining the main characteristics of the status quo on the island.

Turkey, the resolution adds, an aspiring EU member, still stands totally guilty of international aggression against a member state of the EU and the UN, which is a totally unacceptable state of affairs, an affront to the international legal order and an ongoing threat to regional stability that must be urgently redressed.
