[01] CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS PROBLEMPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said that his first meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on September 3, in the framework of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, will be procedural and no discussions on the substance of various issues will be held.Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from Beijing, President Christofias said they would be entering substantive talks during their second meeting on September 11, noting that the first few meetings would deal with governance matters. Replying to questions, President Christofias said "we are entering a very serious process and we must all be very careful, the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey." Asked if the situation in Georgia was affecting developments in Cyprus, President Christofias said any conflict in the world certainly did not contribute to creating the preconditions for world peace and the solution of local or regional problems. [02] CYPRUS ARCHBISHOP BEIJING GAMESThe head of the Church of Cyprus has expressed hope that Ankara will allow the Turkish Cypriot leadership to engage in talks with the Greek Cypriot community, for a negotiated political settlement in Cyprus.Speaking at Larnaca airport, Archbishop Chrysostomos II expressed hope that the political and the military leadership in Turkey will allow the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to negotiate with good will during direct negotiations with the representative of the Greek Cypriot community at the talks, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, for a solution of the Cyprus problem. In his remarks before departing for Beijing, for the Olympic Games, Archbishop Chrysostomos said that he met with the President Christofias at the airport, and wished him every success on his first meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader on September 3. [03] IOANNOU BEIJING 2008Cypriot high-jumper Kyriacos Ioannou failed to qualify for the final in mens high jump in the Beijing Olympic Games.Ioannou, a bronze medalist at the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships mens high jump this year, failed to qualify although he jumped 2.25m. His personal record is 2.35m. Cypriot athlete in sailing (laser) Pavlos Kontides secured Sunday the 12th position and hopes to succeed in participating in the finals. Andreas Cariolou, who competes in sailing RS: X lost Sunday one position in the overall rating and is now 15th, still hoping to achieve his goal to secure a position in the best ten. [04] EUROSTAT GDP - CYPRUSGross Domestic Product (GDP) declined by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27 during the second quarter of 2008, compared with the previous quarter, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.In the first quarter of 2008, growth rates increased by 0.7% in both the euro area and the EU27. In Cyprus, GDP grew by 0.7% during the second quarter of 2008, compared with the first quarter, and by 0.6% in Greece. The highest increase was recorded in Slovakia (1.9%), Lithuania (1.1%), and in the Czech Republic (0.9%). Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP grew by 1.5% in the euro area and by 1.7% in the EU27 in the second quarter of 2008, after +2.1% and +2.3% respectively in the previous quarter.
