An official press release said the Cyprus government expressed its deep concern over developments in Georgia.

According to the press release the Republic of Cyprus supports respect of international law, including respect of the territorial integrity of states, of the UN Charter and the principles of the Helsinki Final Act.

It is also in favour of the peaceful resolution of international disputes by political means, through negotiations and avoidance of unilateral action, which could deteriorate the situation in this sensitive region.

The press release also said that President Christofias will chair Wednesday a meeting of the Council of Ministers to be held at his country residence in Kellaki village.

[02] CYPRUS SYRIA

He was speaking after talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem who is concluding his two day official visit to the island. The two signed an agreement on the abolition of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports and a memorandum of understanding on Bilateral Political Consultations between the two countries.

The Cypriot FM said both countries are facing issues of occupation, we discussed the latest developments both regarding the solution to the Cyprus problem, the reunification of the island, the upcoming talks between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat but also had the opportunity to listen to my colleague on recent developments regarding the Golan Heights and the occupation.

The Syrian Minister said I am very glad to be in Cyprus. This is my first official visit and I hope that this will be a day which will mark and enhance our bilateral relations. We are the closest neighbours of Cyprus and we are looking hopefully for the future cooperation.

[03] COMMISSIONER CHILDRENS RIGHTS VISITS

Speaking to CNA, Koursoumba said the conference in Sweden is organised by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Swedish government, current chairman of the COE, under the title Building a Europe for and with children Towards a Strategy for 2009 -2011.

As she said the joint conference will take place in Stockholm, from 8 to 10 September, and it will be attended by representatives and Commissioners for the Protection of Childrens Rights from different countries.

She noted that it is an important conference in the context of which a constructive debate on many issues concerning the children will take place.

[04] ANORTHOSIS - GREECE - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

If the Cypriot refugee club, currently based in Larnaca after the occupation of Famagusta during the 1974 Turkish invasion, defends its stunning 3-0 victory over Olympiakos in the first leg match, it will be the first Cypriot football club ever to enter the prestigious Champions League`s group stage.

The match will take place Wednesday at Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus at 21:45 local time (18:45 GMT). Anorthosis will be supported by 1,557 funs, since the two clubs finally agreed that Anorthosis should be awarded tickets equaling to 5% of the stadium`s capacity.
