Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou welcomed Russias
firm position on the Cyprus issue and the non-recognition of the
illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in the northern Turkish-occupied areas
of the Republic.
We welcome Russias firm position as far as the Cyprus problem is
concerned and the non-recognition of the illegal regime, the Minister
said, commenting on Turkeys efforts to exploit recent developments in
Georgia to gain recognition of the regime and on statements by Russias
ambassador to Turkey that his country will not recognise it.
Kyprianou said that no-one should compare the situation in Georgia with
the one in Cyprus because they are different.
He said that the situation in Cyprus occupied areas is the result of
Turkeys invasion in 1974 and continuing occupation, a result of war and
as such remains illegal.
