President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began their third meeting on Friday in the context of the UN-led negotiations to reach a comprehensive mutually acceptable settlement to the protracted question of Cyprus problem.

The two leaders arrived at the site of Nicosia Airport in the UN-controlled buffer zone and were greeted by Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on the Cyprus issue, Australian former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Taye - Brook Zerihoun.

Before the meeting, the two leaders were expected to hold a private discussion.

Todays meeting will focus on governance and power sharing.

In statements as he departed from the Presidential Palace, President Christofias said he did not want to cause more tension when asked if todays meeting will help turn around the atmosphere that has been created with Talats recent negative statements.

I do not want to add fuel to the fire, the President said, adding that my effort has always been to maintain a good climate, a climate of trust between the two leaders.

He also said that the basis for a solution has already been defined during their talks.
