  • [01] CYPRUS TALKS - PRESIDENT

President Demetris Christofias expressed satisfaction with the outcome of Fridays meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which is part of UN-led negotiations to reach a comprehensive mutually acceptable settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the press on his return to the Presidential Palace after his morning meeting with Talat, at the UN-controlled Nicosia airport area, he said I am generally satisfied.

Asked if there has been progress on the issue of the federal government, as Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on the Cyprus issue, Australian former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer had said earlier, President Christofias replied whatever Mr. Downer has said expresses the leaders of the two communities.

On his private meeting with Talat before the start of todays talks, Christofias said the two had a friendly discussion, adding they will have more private meetings.

There have been three meetings so far. I dont think we should give the message that the Cyprus problem should have been solved by now, he said, noting that there are five to six very important aspects of the problem on which the two communities have conflicting views. This is clear. Therefore, we more than anybody else, but also you, must be patient, he told the press.

President Christofias said that during the talks we defend our views and positions to reach a solution on the various aspects of the Cyprus problem, a solution which will serve both communities, adding that this will continue as the process advances.

We shall have progress which might not be so quick or at a great speed. So long as we have progress. Today we have made one or two steps which concern the powers of the central government, he concluded.

Downer announced that the leaders meeting was productive and they agreed to meet on a weekly basis. Their next meeting will take place on Monday.

    [02] LABOUR MINISTER ASEM MEETING

Cyprus Labour and Social Insurance Minister Sotiroula Charalambous departs for Bali, Indonesia, on Saturday, to take part in the 2nd ASEM Labour and Employment Ministers` Meeting

This high-level meeting, from 13-15 October, aims to build upon the results of the First ASEM Labour and Employment Ministers` Meeting in Postdam, Germany in 2006.

The Meeting will also examine issues concerning training and employment, economic migration and social protection.

    [03] COMMISSION TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS CYPRUS

The European Commission has agreed to send Commission experts to Cyprus to help local authorities achieve the community goal to halve traffic accidents in Europe by 2010.

The request was submitted by Communications and Works Minister Nicos Nicolaides to Enrico Grillo Director of Inland Transport, DG TREN, on the sidelines of the meeting of the European ministers responsible for transport who convened in Luxembourg on Thursday under the presidency of Dominique Bussereau.

Nicolaides also met with EU Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani with whom they exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, especially in the field of shipping. They also expressed the wish to meet on a bilateral level soon.

The ministers decided jointly to take a decisive step towards the safe and sustainable development of transport. They also agreed unanimously on the need to act together to improve maritime safety by giving their agreement on the last two proposals of the Erika III package, comprising the proposed directive on flag state requirements and that on ship owners insurance. The ministers also made a commitment to ratify by 2012 the International Maritime Organisations (IMO) international agreements.
