    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said here Monday that the decisions Eurozone leaders took in Paris are about state intervention.

    Speaking to the press, Christofias said that Eurozone leaders had to decide on state intervention to deal with the financial crisis.

    He warned that if the leaders do not concentrate on the root of the crisis, then yesterdays decisions will be merely patching up work since the crisis will most likely return.

    [02] CYPRUS TALKS CHRISTOFIAS - NIKIFOROS EXERCISE

    President Demetris Christofias announced here Monday his decision to cancel the annual military exercise of the Republics armed forces, under the code-name Nikiforos.

    He was speaking at the Presidential Palace after his fourth meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the framework of UN-led direct talks for a Cyprus settlement. The two leaders will meet again on 22 October.

    The President told reporters the Cabinet had decided for some time now to suggest to the UN Secretary-General the postponement or cancellation of Nikiforos and to ask that Turkeys military manoeuvres Toros is also cancelled.

    Earlier Monday, Alexander Downer, UN Secretary Generals special adviser for Cyprus, speaking after todays three-hour long meeting, said the leaders had a private discussion which lasted a quarter of an hour.

    Negotiations, he added, resumed on the powers of the executive and said that the representatives of the two leaders and experts will meet on 16 October under UN auspices to continue discussions on the executive. The leaders will meet on 22 October to continue discussions on the executive, following Thursdays meeting, Downer added.
