[01] CYPRIOT FM LONDON VISITCypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou will hold a meeting Wednesday with his British counterpart David Miliband.In statements prior to his departure to London, Kyprianou said he will discuss with Miliband how Britain could enforce the process of direct negotiations which began between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, aiming at reunifying the island, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974. We will exchange views on the Cyprus issue and especially how Britain can support and enhance the process, he said. Moreover, he will discuss with his British counterpart the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom beginning of June in London. Other issues to be discussed are EU and bilateral affairs. During his visit in London, Kyprianou will meet with Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, Lord Hanney and Shadow Secretary of State for Transport Ôheresa Villiers. On Wednesday evening, the Cypriot Foreign Minister will attend the annual dinner organized by the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood for British MPs, members of the House of Lords, European Parliament Members and journalists. This is an annual institution and during dinner it is customary that the Cypriot Foreign Minister talks about the Cyprus issue, Kyprianou said. He noted the importance of briefing British MPs on the Cyprus developments, especially at the current period. From London, the Cypriot FM will fly to Marseille, where he will participate in the Euromediterranean Conference which will discuss the implementation of the EU 27 leaders decision to create the Union for the Mediterranean. Kyprianou returns home Sunday. [02] CYPRUS - LIFE+ PROGRAMMEThe European Commission has approved the funding for 143 new projects under the first call for the LIFE+ programme (2007-2013), the European fund for the environment. The projects are from across the EU and cover actions in the fields of nature conservation, environmental policy, and information and communication. Overall, they represent a total investment of 367 million euro, of which the EU will provide 186 million euro.Regarding Cyprus, the EU will finance a project by the Ministry of the Interior, aiming at facilitating the implementation of the EU directives regarding waste management of electric devices and forms of packing. Following the first call under the LIFE+ programme, the Commission received over 700 proposals from public or private bodies from the 27 EU Member States. [03] SUPREME COURT JUDGECostas Pampallis was sworn in Monday as a new judge of the Supreme Court before President Demetris Christofias, saying that the judiciary can serve as a tool for the President in the ongoing negotiations for a political settlement and pledging to administer justice with impartiality.In his remarks at the swearing in ceremony, President Christofias said that Pampallis long and successful service in the legal profession was the sole criterion on which he based his choice for the appointment. Your competency in the legal profession, your successful service to the judiciary and your virtues as a servant of the law and an officer of justice have been the only criteria of your appointment, the President said. Congratulating Pampallis, the President expressed certainty that he would continue to serve the judiciary as successfully and as faithfully as in the past, thus vindicating his choice for the post. Your commitment to serve well and faithfully the Republic of Cyprus, administering justice without fear, favour, prejudice or passion, does not allow any flexibility or any other interpretation, he stressed. Administering justice was and will remain the safest basis and the healthiest foundation of democracy, he said, pointing out that serving the law is not just a profession, but a vocation, an important mission which warrants strict adherence to the law, a high degree of duty and a passion for the truth.
