[01] UN CHIEF - CYPRUS TALKS
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is confident that the talks for a
Cyprus solution will bear fruit, Michele Montas, Ban`s spokesperson has
said.
During yesterday`s briefing, Montas was asked about Ban`s comment on
press reports that the UN-led direct negotiations between the leaders
of the two communities in Cyprus continue but there is no hope for
progress.
``The Secretary-General does not share that point of view. He thinks
that there is hope and that the talks are going to continue and theyre
going to bear fruit,`` Montas said.
Recalling that Ban has met with all the parties personally, Montas
concluded by saying the Secretary-General is ``very confident that
there will be a positive response.``
[02] US AMBASSADOR - CYPRUS TALKS
The entire international community, including the US and President
elect Barack Obama, will support any agreement reached between the
leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, US Ambassador Frank Urbancic
has said, noting that the solution does not depend on foreign parties,
but on Cypriots themselves.
The US diplomat expressed the view that the two leaders of Cyprus, who
began direct negotiations last September with a view to reunify Cyprus,
divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974, are dedicated to finding a
solution to the islands cruel division.
He called upon the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,
to support the effort of the leaders, President of Cyprus Demetris
Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, and warned
that the compromises that the two communities will be asked to make
will be hard and painful.
