  • [01] UN ADVISER - MEETINGS

The UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer arrived in Cyprus on Monday ``in preparation for two meetings of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders,`` which will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, under UN auspices, according to a UN spokesperson.

The spokesperson noted that on Wednesday ``Downer is scheduled to meet separately with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.``

``This week, Downer will also hold discussions and briefings with members of the diplomatic community and other officials,`` the spokesperson added.

    [02] NATIONAL COUNCIL

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias fully informed the National Council on Monday on the course of the direct talks he is engaged in with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat with an aim to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to a statement read out to reporters by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, the members of the National Council submitted their views and opinions in a positive and constructive atmosphere.

Replying to questions, Stephanou said there were difficulties in the negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, noting that ``we knew this well before starting this process.``

He added that much effort would be needed, along with determination and flexibility, and pointed out that ``we are still at the beginning of the negotiating process.``

``We remain focused and dedicated to this process,`` he assured and expressed hope that the Turkish side would respond accordingly so that ``the road to the solution of the Cyprus problem opens.``
