  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - MEETING

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are meeting in Nicosia on Monday, in the framework of direct negotiations held since early September under UN auspices.

Their latest meeting was held last Thursday, after which President Christofias said that they discussed the executive power and made steps forward.

In a meeting last Friday, the aides of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, decided to bypass the issue of executive power and begin discussions on the legislative power.

    [02] PRESIDENT - RUSSIA

President Demetris Christofias begins on Tuesday, what the government has described as a very important visit to Russia, in political as well as economic terms, during which seven agreements will be signed, to strengthen even further existing friendly relations.

During the four-day official visit, President Christofias and the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev will sign a Political Declaration to develop further ties and cooperation.

[03] ARCHBISHOP - MEETING FOR PEACE

Peace must be based on justice and safeguard the freedom of individuals and peoples, Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II has said addressing the representatives of the various religions and civilizations gathered in Cyprus for an international meeting.

Addressing on Sunday the opening ceremony of the International Meeting for Peace The Civilisation of Peace: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue, organized here by the Church of Cyprus in cooperation with the Saint Egidio Community, Archbishop Chrysostomos II said that religion constitutes the most spiritual aspect of human life and serves peace.

Referring to the Cyprus question, the Archbishop said that an unjust war from Turkey, a country that is 70-100 times bigger than Cyprus resulted to the occupation of 40% of the island.

Archbishop Chrysostomos B underlined that the fact that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have two different religions does not have anything to do with what happened in Cyprus.

    [04] SAINT EGIDIO - CYPRUS

Founder of the Saint Egidio Community Andrea Riccardi expressed hope on Sunday evening that efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem would succeed.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Meeting for Peace ``The Civilisation of Peace: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue``, organised by the Church of Cyprus in cooperation with the Saint Egidio Community, Riccardi said ``our ambition is to turn this wounded island into a place of encounter and dialogue within the Mediterranean Sea.``
