  • [01] PRESIDENT CYPRUS ISSUE

The direct talks on the Cyprus issue are proving to be a hard procedure which demands patience, flexibility and persistence on the principles for a settlement, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said.

Addressing the 25th Conference of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour, President Christofias noted that as it was expected, the direct talks are proving to be a tough process that demands patience, wise handlings, flexibility and persistence to the principles upon which a solution is based on.

He added that the Cyprus Government is not rushing to come to conclusions on the progress of the talks or to foresee dead end pr failures.

We are still at the beginning. It is wrong to send out pessimistic messages, not only because they do not respond to the truth but also because they disappoint the people, President Christofias pointed out.

On the other hand, the President said, it would be wrong to mask the difficulties and send out messages of over-optimism.

President Christofias reassured that during the talks the Cyprus Government is promoting rational and well-documented positions and proposals that do not abolish the goal of achieving a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

He expressed disappointment because the response of the Turkish Cypriot side is not the appropriate one and in the name of bizonality it makes statements that do not serve the aim of reunification.

President Christofias reassured though, that the Cyprus Government will continue with patience, persistence and faith the efforts for a solution.

Regarding the international economic crisis, President Christofias said that Cyprus has so far avoided the consequences of the crisis and that the Government is taking every measure to ensure that it will affect Cyprus in the least possible way.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct talks since September this year, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] UN - LETTER - PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - TURKEY

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemning Turkish obstructions against an exploratory survey conducted by Cyprus within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

On November 13 two ships under foreign flag that were conducting an exploratory survey on behalf of Cyprus the Republic of Cyprus within its EEZ, 27 miles off the south coast of the island we forced by a Turkish warship to cease their operations and withdraw within the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus, under fear for the lives of their crews and the integrity of the ships.

``It becomes apparent that Turkey continues its unacceptable policy of questioning the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus, as a State Member of the United Nations, to exploit the natural resources within its EEZ, in accordance with international law and in particular the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,`` the President notes in his letter to Ban.

Christofias adds that ``the gravity of the incident cannot be overstated, taking into account the crucial time in relation to the efforts for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.``

``Turkey has chosen, once more, to ignore the calls of the international community to actively support the efforts for a solution and, on the contrary, it continues to do all in its power to undermine such efforts by demonstrating aggressive behaviour,`` he stresses.
