[01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS ISSUECyprus President Demetris Christofias is cautiously optimistic as to the prospects for a Cyprus settlement, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.Invited to comment on the course of the ongoing direct negotiations between Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Stephanou said that the President of the Republic has said many times that despite the fact that he is not satisfied by the progress achieved at the negotiations so far, he remains cautiously optimistic as to the prospects for a Cyprus settlement. Stephanou refrained from commenting statements by Talat after his meeting on Tuesday with Christofias, noting that negotiations are taking place at the negotiating table. President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since early September this year, aiming at reuniting the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. [02] CYPRUS - INFLATION - EUROSTATInflation in Cyprus reached in November 3,1% recording a decrease in comparison to October 2008 when it stood at 4,8%.According to data issued Wednesday by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, the Euro area annual inflation was 2,1% in November 2008, down from 3,2% in October. A year earlier the rate was 3,1%. EU annual inflation was 2,8% in November 2008, down from 3,7% in October. A year earlier the rate was 3,1%. In November 2008, the lowest annual rates were observed in Germany and Portugal (both 1,4%), and France and the Netherlands (both 1,9%), and the highest in Latvia (11,6%), Lithuania (9,2%) and Bulgaria (8,8%).
