The solution of the Cyprus problem must be a Cypriot solution, US
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs,
Matthew Bryza has stressed, noting at the same time that his country is
not part of the negotiating process aiming at reuniting the island.
Bryza, who is visiting Cyprus between January 13-15, met on Tuesday
Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, who briefed him in detail
about the latest developments in the Cyprus talks. Speaking after the
meeting, he said that I have been listening very carefully to what
friends and collogues in the Republic of Cyprus have said about how
they want to contact this negotiations.
My country has been modest and quiet and listening and ready to provide
assistance wherever we can. After my visit here, I have the opportunity
to go to Ankara, where I would like to build on whatever I learn here,
to try to further understanding between the two sides in a modest quiet
way, he added. He noted that we are not part of the negotiations, we
dont aspire to be part of it. The solution which will come will have to
be designed and built exclusively by the people who live here in Cyprus
and must be a Cypriot solution.
If there is an opportunity to do something that helps improve
communication, we will listen to our friends and do whatever we can,
but we are simply at this point trying to help those who are really
involved and that is you, Cypriot people, he pointed out. In response
to a question on how optimistic he is that there could be a deal in
Cyprus this year, he said that we are very much hope that this will be
the year. I dont know if I am optimistic or not. I mean, I am humbly
here again one more time listening and trying to validate our own ideas
that we with our excellence Ambassador developed.
