British Minister for Europe Caroline Flint said that her country expects Turkey to fulfill its obligations under the EU accession process and noted the important role that Turkey can play in creating a positive atmosphere at the talks currently taking place between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, with a view to solve the question of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

Addressing the House of Commons during a debate on Cyprus, Flint said this was among the views she expressed during her visit to Ankara before Christmas. I visited Ankara just before Christmas and made our views known to our Turkish colleagues about the important role that they can play in creating a positive atmosphere for those talks Flint said, adding that she was impressed by Turkish positive messages on the issue.
