[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS ECONOMY MEETINGPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias will hold a meeting with government officials to discuss the course of the economy and to review the measures that have been taken to tackle the economic crisis.Speaking at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry annual general assembly, Christofias said that the meeting will examine new measures that may need to be taken. He appealed to business people to exhibit self restraint and frugality and to make proper use of the procedures that exist in implementing projects. He expressed the conviction that despite the negative international economic climate, the dynamic of the Cypriot economy will continue in the future, noting the rate of development for 2009 will range between 1.1% - 2%. President Christofias praised the work which KEVE is carrying out as far as commerce is concerned through the Green Line, adding that he appreciates the chambers efforts to develop commerce between the two communities, noting that by building bridges of cooperation, we are constructing relations of common understanding between the two communities that will have only positive results for a common future in a common country. [02] GREEK MAYOR OLGACS CONFESSIONA Greek mayor is ready to give a statement concerning the confession of a Turkish actor to murdering ten Greek Cypriots during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.Vasilis Yiannopoulos, mayor of Nevrokopiou, was working at the Greek Consular Office in Smyrni (Turkey) in 1990 and was in charge of investigations in Turkey in the issue of Greek Cypriots, missing since the Turkish invasion. On Thursday, he told CNA that he believed the actor Attila Olgac was one of the persons who gave a statement that during the war he had killed people in Cyprus. Why should I not come forward?, Yiannopoulos said when asked if he would give a statement. I consider it an obligation and a duty to the dead, he added. From what Olgac said and what he looks like, his general appearance reminds me of that man. I am not 100% sure, said Yiannopoulos, adding that from what he remembers back in 1990 a specific man came forward and in a simple manner told him what he did. [03] CYPRUS ECONOMY EU RECOVERY PLANThe European Commission proposed on Wednesday the allocation of 20 million euro to Cyprus and Malta as part of a 5 billion euro investment in the EUs energy, internet broadband infrastructure and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The investment is a part of the EU recovery plan endorsed by the European Council in December 2008 and covers the years 2009-2010.Cyprus and Malta will be allocated 20 million euro for the implementation of local energy projects while they will participate in the EU funding for high-speed internet and the CAP. The Commission has proposed the allocation of 1.75 billion for gas and electricity interconnectors, 500 million for offshore wind projects and 1.25 billion for carbon capture and storage projects across the EU. It is also proposing a 1 billion investment extending and upgrading broadband internet in rural communities. The EU is aiming for 100 per cent broadband access by 2010, but currently around 30 per cent of its rural population lacks broadband access. [04] LORD MAYOR - CITY OF LONDON-VISITThe Lord Mayor of the City of London Alterman Ian Luder has described the links between Cyprus and the UK as strong, positive and constructive. Speaking at a Gala Dinner hosted by the Cyprus-UK Business Association, he added that he was on the island to cement existing contacts and to explore the scope for more.According to a press release, issued by the British High Commission, the Lord Mayor, who concluded his visit to Cyprus on Wednesday, said that the links between Cyprus and the UK, at every level are strong. The numbers of Cypriots living in the UK and the number of British people living here illustrate our close ties. These links are positive and constructive, reinforced by our joint membership of the European Union, he noted. At economic and commercial level, he added, the UK is Cyprus biggest trading partner in goods and services. In the City, Cypriot banks, financial services companies, insurance, banking, shipping and legal firms have strong contacts which have brought prosperity to both countries. This is a good news story.
