  • [01] CYPRUS - MEDITERRANEAN - PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY

The Mediterranean area is one of the most unstable regions and is expected to be dramatically affected by increasing temperatures and the rising of the sea level, President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian said on Friday, addressing the opening of the meetings of the Special Working Groups of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, on climate change, environment, and the management of natural disasters.

Addressing the same event, President of the Democratic Rally and Head of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean Nicos Anastasiades said the approach of the issue of climate change should be comprehensive and should include short-term, medium-term and long-term aims.

Garoyian also spoke to the foreign delegates about the Cyprus problem, noting that Turkey, as a candidate for accession to the EU, should abandon its unacceptable positions on Cyprus in order to avoid a collapse of direct negotiations on the island for a comprehensive settlement.

He said the Greek Cypriot side is ready for a just compromise, based on international law, noting that if Turkey insists on maintaining troops and settlers on the island and continues to ignore the UN decisions and EU principles and values, then the direct negotiations between the two sides in Cyprus would fail.

``Cyprus once again calls on our friends to indicate to Turkey that it must alter its stance on the Cyprus problem, behave and act on the basis of the principles of international law and human rights, so that our people can live in a safer and happier world, as we want the whole region around the Mediterranean to become a safer and happier place,`` he added.

    [02] CoR PRESIDENT - CYPRUS

President of the EU Committee of Regions (CoR), Luc Van den Brande, said on Friday that Nicosia is the last and unacceptable divided line in Europe.

The European official, who is currently in Cyprus on an official visit, was received Friday by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and later on held a meeting with Mayor of Nicosia Eleni Mavrou.

In a press conference Friday, van den Brande said that his visit in Cyprus shows the interest of the CoR in this last and not acceptable divided line in Europe.

He also referred to Famagusta, a city on the east, which has been under Turkish occupation since 1974. The fenced off part of the city is under the direct control of the Turkish military and remains to this day abandoned.

Van den Brande said that the regeneration of the whole surrounding region of Famagusta, including the return of its fenced off area to life, has to be taken into consideration and turned into a win-win situation for both communities.

    [03] XIII GSSE - CYPRUS

Cyprus aspires to rank first in the list of medals when it will host the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe (1-6 June), President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee Ouranios Ioannides said here Friday.

In a press conference, 100 days before the opening ceremony Ioannides said the aspirations of the committee is that our team ranks first in the list of medals, something, which he added, we owe it to Cyprus, to every Cypriot and the new generation. This is our primary aim and we cannot settle for anything less, he underlined.

Among the aims of the COC during the Games is for the stadiums to be full of spectators in support of both Cypriot and foreign athletes, to witness high performances and to hold clean games that will be free of false victories or performances.

Ioannides said there will be events both before and during the Games as this is a time to celebrate, adding that on the eve of the opening ceremony, 31st May, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the COC as well as the 30 years since the International Olympic Committee recognized the COC, will be celebrated. Events will continue until the 10th June.
