In his address at an official dinner given by the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II, in the framework of his visit to Copenhagen, Papoulias expressed the hope that the recent momentum will open a window of opportunity to help resolve the Cyprus problem which will enable Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to live together in peace and harmony in a European environment of security.

It is unacceptable for the military occupation to continue in Cyprus, an EU member state, by a country seeking to join the European family, he stressed.

He said that it was also unacceptable a European capital, Nicosia, to still be divided by walls, adding that maintaining partition and occupation is an affront to the democratic character of the Union and its long-standing values».

A just, viable and functional solution in Cyprus will enable the people of the island, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to live together in peace and harmony in a European environment of security, development and prosperity,» he added.

While in London, he will also meet Minister for Europe Caroline Flint and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma.

Kyprianou attended on Monday the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the EU in Brussels, where the EU27 Ministers of Foreign Affairs dealt with the preparation of the EU Summit (18-19 June) and issues related to the EU-Russia Summit (21-22 May). They also discussed the situation in Moldova, Sri Lanka, Burma, Iran and Georgia.

Asked about the EU-Turkey Association Council, Kyprianou said it will not be appropriate to make any comments before the meeting. He recalled however that there is a unanimous position which defines the right principles concerning EU Turkey relations.

[03] FLINT - CYPRUS TALKS

During her meeting on Monday with AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou in London, Flint expressed the will of Britain to help towards the direction of the solution of the Cyprus problem by intervening towards Turkey and supporting the will of the leaders of the two communities to speed up the negotiating process.

Kyprianou and Flint briefed each other on the course of the direct talks and the basic aspects of the Cyprus problem. Kyprianou made a special reference to the opening of Limnitis crossing point, in the islands northwest, to facilitate movement to and from the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. He said Britain can be helpful towards this goal.

[04] GERMAN MPS - FAMAGUSTA

The group has issued an announcement, regarding a meeting that took place on May 14, in Berlin between a delegation from Famagusta Municipality, headed by Mayor Alexis Galanos, and members of the group.

According to an official announcement, Galanos briefed the members of the group on the issue of Famagusta and the latest developments in the ongoing UN-led direct negotiation process.

The President of the Group Dietmar Bartsch agreed with Galanos that specific progress in the issue of the occupied city of Famagusta would definitely have a positive effect on efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, the announcement said.
