Developments in the Cyprus question, Turkeys EU accession course and issues of illegal immigration were discussed during meetings which Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Yiannis Valinakis had on Tuesday with foreign officials.

Valinakis met Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain Lopez Garrido and the Dutch Deputy Minister of Justice, responsible for asylum and Immigration, Nebahat Albayrak.

During his meeting with Garrido, Valinakis noted Greeces support for efforts by the Cypriot side to achieve a solution based on UN resolutions and EU principles and values, and made particular reference to the need for immediate implementation of the Ankara Protocol and the opening of Turkish ports and airports to Cypriot ships and planes.

Valinakis reiterated Greeces firm support for Turkeys European perspective, stating that Turkey will not be able to join the great European family if it does not move on time to meet all criteria and prerequisites set out by the EU.

Regarding the issue of illegal immigration, the two Deputy Ministers discussed practical ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on a European level and to inform other European partners on time and adequately to address this common problem within a framework of effective actions and tangible expression of EU solidarity.

The Spanish Deputy Minister briefed the Greek Minister about the priorities of Spain which will assume the European presidency in the first half of 2010, with particular emphasis on efforts to tackle the global financial crisis, but also on relations with the countries of the Mediterranean and the US.

Garrido said the Spanish Presidency will give special emphasis on strengthening the European Maritime Policy and European policies concerning the islands, taking a series of actions.

The issue of illegal immigration was also discussed during Valinakis meeting with the Dutch Deputy Minister of Justice Albayrak.
