  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - LIMNITIS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Wednesday that his wish and effort was for an agreement to be achieved with the Turkish Cypriot side to open a crossing point in Limnitis, to facilitate movement to and from the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic.

To a remark that the opening of the crossing point may be agreed on during his next meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the context of direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, President Christofias said that ``on my part, at least, it is one hundred percent, but lets wait and see.``

Asked about his meeting earlier in the day with the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer, President Christofias said it was one of many with the UN official.

``There was an exchange of views on current developments, including the issue of opening the Limnitis crossing point,`` he said.

    [02] UN OFFICIAL - LIMNITIS

The UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on the Cyprus problem Alexander Downer said on Wednesday that the issue of opening a crossing point in Limnitis, in the western part of Cyprus is up to the leaders of the two communities.

Lets leave that to the leaders. Obviously this is an ongoing issue and I think for a lot of people has become an important issue so there are ongoing discussions about it,`` Downer said in statements after a meeting with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.

Replying to a question that the Turkish Cypriot side seems optimistic that the details will be agreed by the next meeting of President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on June 26, Downer he does not want to comment on expectations.

Replying to a question whether the issue is a matter of details, the Australian diplomat said ``it is always been a matter of details but there are a lot of details and there are talks about all these matters.``
