[01] VIETNAM FM - CYPRUS ISSUE
Vietnamese deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Phan Gia Khiem,
on an official visit to Greece, has said that the Cyprus issue must be
resolved within the framework of the UN. Speaking after a meeting with
Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis, Khiem expressed the strong
interest of his country in the question of Cyprus, adding that his
government shares the concerns of Greece on the matter.
«We believe that the Cyprus issue must be resolved within the framework
of the United Nations and we respect UN resolutions», he said.
Bakoyiannis said she had an interesting discussion with Khiem, which
covered a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues as
well as the international financial recession.
She added that among the topics discussed were the issue of the name of
the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greco-Turkish relations, and
illegal immigration. Bakoyiannis also said that they would discuss the
Cyprus issue as well as the initiatives taken by the Greek presidency
of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE),
during an official dinner.
[02] 2009 MEDITERRANEAN GAMES CYPRUS TEAM
Cyprus will participate in the XVI Mediterranean Games with 69
athletes. The games will be held in Pescara, Italy, from June 26 to
July 5. According to a press release, issued by the Cyprus Olympic
Committee (COC), the Cypriot team is confident that it will maintain
the achievements secured in the previous Mediterranean Games.
Ouranios Ioannides, COC President, speaking at a press conference
today, said that the teams goal is to secure seven medals. In the 2005
Almeria Games, Cyprus won one gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
He added that the Cypriot athletes can secure medals in athletics,
shooting, weightlifting, and swimming.
