President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Thursday that he began discussion on security issues with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the context of UN-led direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.

Speaking on his return to the Presidential Palace after his meeting with Talat, President Christofias noted that ``the discussion on the issue of security began, the first views were presented by the leaders of the two communities and we will continue next week.``

Replying to questions, President Christofias said he is in consultation with the leaders of the political parties to convene the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem.

He added that the parties are fully briefed on the course of the negotiations at meetings of party leaders with the President, during meetings of the National Council or over the telephone. The President also noted that he was still expecting all the parties to submit their views on various aspects of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island.

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat discussed here today security matters and issues relating to guarantees, during their 36th meeting, in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiating process, aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

In statements after todays meeting, Tayee-Brook Zerihoun, the Secretary-Generals Special Representative in Cyprus, said that the two leaders started with a tete-a-tete meeting for an hour and half during which they discussed various things. Then, in plenary they read their introductory statements on the issue of security and guarantees and they agreed that during the next meeting, they will officially respond to those introductory statements, he added.
