[01] CYPRUS PROTEST UN - TURKEYCyprus` Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Louis Telemachou in a letter to the UN Secretary General, protested the new violations of international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkish military aircrafts recorded from 1 June to 31 July 2009.In his letter, which was circulated as a General Assembly document, Telemachou notes that ``Turkey`s continuous policy violating international law and ignoring international norms and regulations continues to severely jeopardize the safety of international civil aviation and further contributes to the sense of insecurity on the island``. ``Turkey, now serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council``, he says, ``should abide by the Charter of the United Nations and the Security Council resolutions, and refrain from its attempts to impose the de facto division of Cyprus``. ``Turkey should cease its efforts to upgrade the illegal secessionist entity in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Such actions do not contribute to the maintenance of a conducive atmosphere for the full-fledged United Nations-led negotiations of the leaders of the two communities for a viable solution to the problem of Cyprus``, he concludes. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] ARCHBISHOP RELIGIOUS SITES - DESTRUCTIONArchbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has protested the destruction and plundering of Cyprus religious sites in the northern Turkish- occupied part of the country and asked for the support of Polands Orthodox Church.The Archbishop, who continues his official visit to Poland at the invitation of Polish Orthodox Church leader, Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland Sawa, delivered a speech after a service held in the Cathedral of Saint Nicolas Biaystok and sought the support of the Polish Orthodox Church and the Polish politicians for Cyprus. The civilised humanity does not care about principles, freedom and justice. We ask help from you all. First of all in your prayers to God, and if possible, we ask for your intervention to the politicians in your country. A sister Orthodox Church is now faced with real danger for its survival, the Archbishop stressed. He referred to the Turkish invasion against Cyprus in 1974 as well as to Turkeys policy to bring illegally to the occupied areas of Cyprus Muslim Turkish settlers from Anatolia, thus changing the demographic structure of the island. The Archbishop said that more than 500 religious sites in the Turkish occupied areas have been converted into stables, stores, hen-houses, mosques and military camps. [03] CYPRUS TOURISM DECREASETourist arrivals in Cyprus have recorded a decrease of 11.2% in July 2009 compared to July 2008.According to data issued Thursday by the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, on the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 304.126 in July 2009 compared to 342.554 in July 2008, recording a decrease of 11.2%. A decrease of 16.8% was recorded in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom (155.901 in July 2009 compared to 187.401 in July 2008), 15.6% decrease from Russia (23.653 compared to 28.017) and 8.2% decrease from Sweden (15.438 compared to 16.810 last year). On the other hand, an increase of 6.4% was recorded in tourist arrivals from Greece (from 14.039 in July 2008 to 14.940 in July 2009).
