  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

House of Representatives President Marios Garoyian called the United Kingdom on Monday to follow the example of Greece and state that it does not wish to be a guarantor power of Cyprus after a solution of the island`s political problem.

Speaking before foreign personalities, in Cyprus for the Morphou Municipality anti-occupation events and replying to questions, Garoyian said ``the Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the UN and the EU, and in no case can it mortgage its sovereignty and independence to any other country.``

He added that the UK could send a clear message to Turkey that it does not wish to be a guarantor power and that no country should have intervention rights.

``If there are to be any guarantees, then they should come from the EU,`` the House President pointed out.

Garoyian briefed the Morphou Municipality guests on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the course of negotiations to reach a settlement, describing results so far as poor and pointing out that Turkey still maintains its intransigent stance.

Regarding Turkey`s evaluation by the EU in December, Garoyian said Ankara has not met any of the obligations it undertook in 2004 towards the EU and the Republic of Cyprus.

Commenting on the signing of an agreement between Turkey and Armenia, Garoyian said Turkey`s willingness to normalise its relations with Armenia was a communication tactic due to pressure exerted on it concerning the Armenian genocide and to its EU accession course.
