[01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - US ASSISTANT SECRETARYThe United States strongly believes that talks aiming to reach a Cyprus settlement should be a Cypriot-led process, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Tina Kaidanow has said.In statements after a meeting she had on Friday with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, during her visit on the island, Kaidanow said that she had a very-very interesting and very productive day here in Cyprus, noting that this was her first time on the island. ``I have seen a number of people, we have exchanged views on a whole range of things, including our bilateral relationship between the United States and Cyprus which is very important to us, as well as on the settlement discussions and what may come in the future and various perspectives on that, she added. She noted that everyone had some very interesting things to say. Asked if its time for the US to become more engaged and more involved in the process, perhaps with the appointment of an envoy, she said that we have always said that we believe strongly that it should be a Cypriot-led process. We are very hopeful that the two leaders can continue their discussions and find a very fruitful way forward and thats what I expressed to all my interlocutors today, she concluded. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] CYPRUS FM TURKEY CYPRUS ISSUEMinister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou said on Friday that Turkey could not remain a mere observer of the process to solve the Cyprus problem but should actively assist efforts for a settlement.He added that this was what he explained in a meeting earlier in the day with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Tina Kaidanow. Speaking at Larnaca Airport before departing for Cairo for a visit at the invitation of Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, Kyprianou said his meeting with Kaidanow was ``friendly and constructive,`` adding that he briefed the US official on the talks to solve the Cyprus problem and how the government perceived Turkey`s role in the process. Kyprianou said they also discussed the positions of the Republic of Cyprus concerning relations between the EU and Turkey, relations between Cyprus and the United States, and bilateral issues. [03] MINISTER OF COMMERCE MEDREG - ENERGY POLICYCypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides outlined Friday the government`s energy policy which aims to alleviate the island`s dependency on fuel imports.Addressing the 8th MEDREG General Assembly hosted in Nicosia, Paschalides pointed out that Cyprus as an island away from various international networks of electricity oil and gas, has to rely almost exclusively on imported fuels to satisfy its energy needs, adding that in 2008 more than 94% of total energy consumption is supplied by imported fuels. ``Oil imports are a considerable burden on the islands economy,`` he said. Paschalides added that the Cypriot new Support Scheme to promote the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), covering the period 2009-2013, provides more generous incentives than the previous Scheme and sets more ambitious targets for the increase of the utilization/contribution of the countrys main renewable energy sources, to the total electricity consumption and overall to the total energy balance. [04] STATISTICAL SERVICE - CYPRUS - GDPThe Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Cyprus dropped by 2.9% during the third quarter of 2009 compared to the corresponding period of 2008, according to Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat). Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at -2,7%.According to a press release issued by CyStat, the contraction of the economy during the third quarter of 2009 is mainly attributed to the very negative growth rates observed in Construction and Hotels and Restaurants as well as the negative performance of Manufacturing, Trade and Transport activities. The Financial Intermediation activities as well as the broad Services sector continue to record positive growth rates but at a decelerating rate. The GDP reached 3,812 million Euros during the third quarter of 2009, compared to 3,927 million Euros during the corresponding period of 2008.
