Invited Tuesday to comment on statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan after his meeting with US President Barack Obama, Stephanou said that the government of Cyprus does not accept the proposal for a four- or five- party meeting on the Cyprus issue, pointing out that there is already a UN procedure underway among the two communities of Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot.

Our goal is to continue dialogue and negotiations until the end. Our expectation and wish is to find the same constructive positions on the table submitted by the other side as well so that we can reach an overall solution, he stressed.

Procedures followed in the past, in 2004, must not be repeated, Stephanou said, noting that they have proved to be ineffective.

[02] INFANT - FLU FATALITY

Director of the Pediatric Clinic on the Makarios Hospital and Head of the Intensive Care Unit Dr. Andreas Hadjidemetriou said the infant`s death will be recorded as the first fatality from influenza A in Cyprus.

The baby girl was being treated at Makarios Hospital for the past three weeks and, according to Hadjidemetriou, she was admitted with a high temperature and diagnosed as an influenza A case.

He added that the next day the infant developed respiratory problems, was diagnosed with pneumonia, and was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

[03] COMMERCE MINISTER - TOURISM

In his address at the annual general meeting of the Pancyprian Association of Hotel Directors that was held in Nicosia and was read by Cyprus Tourism Organisation Director Fivi Katsouri, Paschalides said that the Association plays a fundamental role in developments in the Cypriot tourist industry.

He acknowledged that the tourist sector is undergoing a difficult period, noting that both 2009 and 2010 are years greatly affected by the global economic crisis and tourism is a vulnerable sector, undergoing negative consequences.

Paschalides said that the government has tried to lessen the losses for Cyprus and has taken significant measures which will be in place until the end of 2010. The Minister said the problems and challenges in tourism will continue to exist even after the crisis and for this reason we have to deal with them on time. We urgently need to enrich our tourist product, upgrade the services offered and strengthen the countrys competitiveness.
