  • [01] INTENSIVE TALKS - FIRST ROUND

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat hold Wednesday their third and last meeting of the first round of the intensive talks, in the context of the ongoing UN-led negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The intensive round is being held at the official residence of UNFICYP Chief of Mission in the UN Protected Area in two phases.

The first round of meetings began on Monday and will conclude today, while the second round will take place on the 25th, 26th and 27th of January.

In statements to the press on his return to the Presidential Palace after the conclusion of yesterdays meeting, President Christofias said that he and Mehmet Ali Talat continued the open discussion on the chapter of governance, in the context of intensive talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

He also said that he submitted a document with the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the issue.

He added that they would continue their discussion today, while he made it clear that this did not mean a discussion on the document would take place.

The two leaders have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] DOWNER - BICOMMUNAL SEMINAR

The two communities in Cyprus have to learn to live and work together increasingly in the years ahead for Cyprus to have a successful future, UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer has said.

Addressing a bicommunal seminar on Children at risk, organised by the technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters, held Wednesday at the Ledra Palace, Downer congratulated at first the Committee on convening this seminar because, as he added, its a seminar on a topic which is of enormous importance.

From the point of view of the United Nations, he continued, we have been very enthusiastic to see the two communities in Cyprus increasingly getting together.

If Cyprus is to have a very successful long term future as an island of people, well then they have to learn to live together and work together increasingly in the years ahead, he noted.

He said that they must find common links and exploit and work on those common links that they have and reach a better understanding of each other as time goes on.

    [03] HADJICOSTIS - FUNERAL

Andy Hadjicostis, managing director of the DIAS media group, which includes Sigma TV, was murdered Monday evening in Nicosia.

His funeral will take place today in Nicosia.

Hadjicostis, 42, was getting out of his car at around 20:45 when a man wearing a helmet shot him twice with a shotgun at close range. The gunman then escaped on a powerful motorcycle driven by another man.
