[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - ISRAELÉ FMForeign Minister of Israel Avigdor Lieberman said that his country hopes to upgrade its relations with Cyprus. In a statement after being received by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, Lieberman said that they had a very good meeting, adding that ``we have excellent relations``.Liberman underlined that within the last five months he had three meetings with the Foreign Minister of Cyprus Marcos Kyprianou with whom he discussed various issues. ``We are two small countries, two small democracies in this part of the world sharing the same values and this dialogue is very important for the whole region,`` he added. Liberman referred to the agreement on shipping that he signed here on Wednesday adding that Israel hopes to upgrade its relations with Cyprus. He added that the Israeli President extended an invitation to President Christofias to pay an official visit to Israel. Replying to a question he said that Cyprus and Israel face similar problems such as illegal immigration and the two countries exchange views on those issues. [02] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS PROBLEMCypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Thursday statements by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu about the drafting of a new set of proposals on the Cyprus problem by Turkey are part of a communication game. ``Obviously Turkey feels the need to make moves,`` he said adding that Davutoglu wants to show that Turkey is ready to submit new proposals.Turkish daily ``Sabah`` quoted Davutoglu as saying that Turkey has prepared proposals on five chapters being discussed in the ongoing UN-led negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, namely on property, EU matters, economic matters, territory and guarantees. These proposals are additional to the proposals submitted by the Turkish Cypriot side on Governance and Power-sharing, which have been considered by the Greek Cypriot side as ``way off what has been agreed as the basis of negotiations for a bi-zonal bi-communal federation for a single state, with a single sovereignty, single citizenship and one international personality.`` Stephanou stressed that ``we expect Turkey to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of UN resolutions,`` pointing out that the conclusions of the December 2009 EU General Affairs and External Relations stipulate that Turkey`s role in the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem is crucial. With regard to the document submitted by the Turkish Cypriot side before the commencement of the first phase of the intensive talks, which concluded on Wednesday, Stephanou noted that the document is not considered as a negotiating basis. He added that the document submitted by the Greek Cypriot side on Tuesday, the second day of the intensive phase of the negotiations, includes the proposals submitted by the Greek Cypriot side since the commencement of the negotiations. [03] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEMHouse President Marios Garoyian has said that recent statements by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu prove once again that proposals submitted by the Turkish Cypriot side during the ongoing direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem have been dictated by Turkey.``Mr Davutoglu has confirmed what was known to us for a long time now that the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot side have been drafted by Turkey,`` Garoyian said replying to questions. He reiterated that the document submitted by the Turkish side during the first phase of the intensive talks, which concluded on Wednesday, proves that the Turkish side has not altered its stance and attitude and for that reason there is no progress to the talks. Garoyian noted that the document includes positions that refer to a confederation and violate human rights and UN resolutions as well as the principles and values of the EU. [04] COMMISSIONER VASSILIOU - EUROPARLIAMENTMultilingualism, training and mobility for teachers and young people, the role of sport and the preservation of cultural diversity were among the issues for which the Cypriot Commissioner-designate for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou, was questioned by MEPs on Thursday, during her hearing.``We should make sure that every EU programme we apply has a direct impact on citizens` lives``, Vassiliou stressed. Among her key priorities the Commissioner-designate highlighted the importance of strengthening education, increasing mobility opportunities for young people and creating an environment that promotes culture and creativity.
