[01] LEADERS - TALKS - SECOND DAY
The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris
Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat, continue their
discussions on Tuesday on governance and power sharing, as part of
their effort to find a negotiated settlement.
As President Christofias pointed out after Mondays lengthy meeting with
Talat, the objective is not to terminate the talks but to find a
solution that will reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish
invasion.
We are making a genuine attempt to find convergences on the issue of
governance and power sharing. This is not an easy task, nonetheless it
is not a vain effort either and we shall continue on Tuesday, the
President said in his remarks.
Speaking after Monday`s meeting, the UN Secretary General`s Special
Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that ``the two leaders met most
of the day in a tete-a-tete session and they have authorised me to say
that they had a very friendly meeting or series of meetings.``
``They have had a very significant exchange of ideas. On Tuesday
morning they will be meeting again in a plenary session and they will
be discussing these ideas more broadly with the plenary group,`` he
added.
