The construction of the new Limassol marina, a project expected to enhance and enrich the tourist product in Cyprus, has started officially and is expected be ready in the autumn of 2012.

Speaking at a press conference, General Manager of the company Limassol Marina Ltd, Takis Palaikythritis, said that it is an innovative and ambitious project which enhances the infrastructure for marine tourism, enriching the tourist product, and opens new perspectives not only for Limassol but also for Cyprus as a whole.`` Our vision is to give Limassol a marina of high standards which will have nothing to envy of other harbours abroad, and in addition it will be a point of reference, he noted.

The project consists of 280 units (residential, commercial, entertainment and cultural development) and it is expected to cost more than 350 million euro and cover a land area of 100 thousand square meters. The marine area will stretch 170 thousand square meters and can accommodate up to one thousand vessels. The General Mananger of the Project stressed that Limassol marina will enrich the tourist product, create new jobs, enhance the area of the historic centre of Limassol and trigger investment in the region.

[03] CYRPUS FIRST LADY - DIGNITARIES - HAEMOGLOBIN DISORDERS

First Ladies from Lebanon and Albania have gathered in Nicosia at the invitation of the First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus Elsi Christofia and the President of the Thalassaemia International Federation Panos Englezos to inaugurate the International Circle of Dignitaries for the benefit of patients with haemoglobin disorders.

The Circle of Dignitaries is a new initiative by the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), the Cyprus-based global federation of thalassaemia associations. The objective of the Circle is to support the efforts of TIF to promote greater awareness of haemoglobin disorders, effective prevention and optimal patient care globally. Elsi Christofia said that ``Cyprus has a long track-record of effective prevention and treatment of thalassaemia and provides a successful model for other countries to follow``.

She said that in Cyprus there are about 600 thalassaemia patients, noting that Cyprus has managed to control fully the births of thalassaemia patients. Both Lebanon and Albania on the other hand, she added, are examples of countries where TIF has for many years been actively involved and where significant progress has been achieved in the quality of life of patients.
