Speaking during a ceremony to present the Cyprus Export Awards for 2008, President Christofias expressed optimism that problems in the sector of exports would be overcome with the measures taken on all levels, the cooperation and understanding of the social partners, the dynamism and flexibility of the businesspeople, and continuous efforts to improve the competitiveness of Cypriot products, especially with investment in new technology.

He assured that the government would continue to provide encouragement and assistance to private initiatives, and noted that a healthy, stable, durable and continuously developing economy was a factor of welfare and progress for the people, as well as secure infrastructure for the struggle for national survival and justification.

``We do not forget that our economy is facing new challenges due to our accession to the EU and its adaptation to the new circumstances that have arisen by the internationalisation of the market, without any regulation and the conditions of severe competition, and lately the crisis in the global financial system and the real economy,`` he said.

The President pointed out that the aim was ``social and financial modernisation of the country, focusing on the people and their needs.``

Speaking extempore, President Christofias said that Cyprus could reduce its fiscal deficit below 3% if the right measures were taken, and noted that the government had prepared a package of measures for the economy and that a dialogue would soon begin with the social partners.

He also referred to the necessity to reduce bureaucracy, noting that everyone should contribute in this direction.

[02] CYPRUS EXPORT AWARDS

In the industrial product category, the award for small industrial units with less than 50 employees went to MP Theodorou (Salt Industry) & Co Ltd, the award for large industries with more than 50 employees went to ALCO Filters (Cyprus) Ltd, the EU award for businesses with up to 50 employees went to Petrou Bros Dairy Products Ltd, and the EU award for businesses with more than 50 employees went to Enfoton Solar Ltd.

The export award for agricultural products went to Kourtellaris Imports-Exports Ltd, and the special award for the export of industrial products went to Elysee Irrigation Ltd.

Furthermore, the export awards for services went to Totalserve Management Ltd and Consulco Ltd, while the export award for tourist services went to Kanika Hotels Public Co Ltd.

[03] CYPRUS - TOURIST ARRIVALS

A decrease of 10.2% was recorded in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom (17,788 in January 2010 compared to 19,809 in January 2009) and 8.1% decrease from Germany (4,083 compared to 4,442 last year).

On the other hand, an increase of 8.4% was recorded in tourist arrivals from Greece (from 6,888 in January 2009 to 7,470 in January 2010).

[04] COMMERCE MINISTER - MILAN

It invokes participation from top international operators. Bit 2010 is the number one event in Italy, and one of the leading events for the tourism sector. Its objective is to monitor the market, listen, and exchange ideas and information with exhibitors and operators. The four-day event is completely dedicated to trade.

This year, 300 national and international sellers and 160 buyers from 11 different countries will participate, with the main objective to seize new business opportunities in one of the fastest-growing segments. Travelers and operators get to view and experience the tourist destinations around the world.

During his stay, Paschalides will hold meetings with Tour Operators to expand Cyprus position in the Italian tourist market and to find additional ways to promote Cyprus. He will also meet representatives of daily economic newspapers.
